Ad desk, step 7

Measuring a print ad without guessing

Digital's real advantage was never the audience; it was the receipts. Print can have receipts too, for almost nothing.

Instrument every insertion with response devices only print readers can trigger: a promo code unique to the paper, a vanity URL that appears nowhere else, a tracked phone line, or a coupon that must physically arrive. Then divide the insertion cost by the responses and you hold the only number that matters: cost per lead, from print, in dollars.

Buying craft, not a published rate: instrumentation methods are craft; your own response counts are the evidence that matters.

The matched-market test, shrunk to SMB size

National advertisers prove print by running it in one market and not another, then comparing sales. The small-business version: run four weeks in the paper, then four weeks dark, twice. If tracked calls and code redemptions rise in the on-weeks both cycles, the paper is working; if the lines are flat, it is not, whatever the rep’s recall study says. Industry recall research (the News/Media Alliance publishes it) is context, not proof, for your specific ad.

The verdict arithmetic

Cost per lead, and the rebooking decision

Insertion cost divided by tracked responses equals cost per response; multiply your close rate through and you have cost per customer, comparable directly against your average CAC from digital channels. Print earns its slot when its cost per customer, at honest counts, beats or matches the marginal cost of the next digital dollar, which digital’s rising CPCs make likelier each year. Expect undercounting: codes go unmentioned and coupons stay on fridges, so print’s measured number is its floor, not its ceiling.
