Papers: the flagship

New York Times advertising cost

The most asked-about ad buy in American print, and one of the least documented. Here is what can actually be verified.

The New York Times publishes no public print rate card: display advertising is quote-only through its sales organization at advertising.nytimes.com, and obituaries and classifieds route through partner placement channels that price in the order flow. Any site quoting a current NYT full-page dollar figure is citing a leak, a rumor, or a decade-old card.

How the desk actually works

Display inquiries go through the advertising site’s contact flow, where a seller scopes your category, budget, and dates before any number appears. This is standard quote-only behavior: the price is built for you, which also means it is built on what the conversation reveals about your ceiling. Go in holding arithmetic: know your size in column inches, and know what the one published national card charges for comparable national prestige, because it is the only citable benchmark in the tier.

What the desk says

What it means

Pricing depends on the program we build together.

Quote-only. Ask for the print-only figure for your specific unit and dates before discussing bundles.

Most partners run print and digital together.

Bundling obscures the print unit price. Get the components priced separately, then decide.

For obituaries, our placement partner will help you.

Death notices and classifieds run through in-flow portals that meter by length, like every paper's. See the obituary page for the meter.

Fit and alternatives

Who buys the Times, and who only thinks they should

The print NYT delivers national cultural reach and the second audience every open-letter buy wants: journalists. Books, arts, luxury, advocacy, and institutional messages fit. A regional business buying “the paper everyone respects” is usually buying waste; its customers are in one metro and the Times is everywhere. The comparisons: NYT vs WSJ and NYT vs Washington Post, with close times and audience notes; the full-page economics page covers the statement-buy case.
