The chains: the biggest one
Gannett advertising, translated
If your town has a daily, there is a fair chance Gannett owns it. Buying it means meeting LocaliQ.
Gannett, the largest US newspaper chain, sells its 200-plus local titles and USA Today through LocaliQ, its marketing services arm. The posture is consultation-first and quote-only: localiq.com publishes no dollar figures, and every path leads to a call where print is one line in a proposed program. You can still buy just the paper; you have to insist.

Single title or bundle
Yes, you can buy one local title: the reps would rather sell the network, but individual insertions in individual papers remain a product. The bundle logic works when your customers genuinely span several Gannett markets (a regional home-services brand across three cities the chain covers). It fails when the bundle’s extra titles are simply extra circulation you cannot serve. Bring a map of your service area to the call and price only the titles inside it.
What the desk says
What it means
“Let's talk about your overall marketing goals.”
The consultation script. Answer once, briefly, then redirect: 'Today I need print rates for [title], [unit], [dates].'
“Print works best as part of an integrated program.”
Digital attach is where the margin lives. Get the print-only figure first; bolt on digital later if it stands on its own.
“I can get you into all our regional titles.”
Reach outside your service area is waste dressed as value. Price per useful reader, per title.
“This rate is only good this month.”
Chain reps carry monthly targets. Deadline pressure is real for them, which makes month-end a good time to be a flexible buyer.
Leverage
Negotiating with a local monopoly that answers to a chain
In many Gannett markets the daily is the only daily, which sounds like weak buyer leverage. In practice the chain’s scale cuts your way: targets are set centrally, discount authority exists, and the rep can approve tiers a family-owned paper never would. The standard scripts apply, plus one chain-specific ask: “what does this schedule price at across the quarter?” Compare the answer with the other chain you may meet at Gannett vs Lee, and see the flagship’s own page at USA Today.
