The chains: the local specialist

Lee Enterprises advertising, translated

Lee's identity is mid-size markets where its paper is the paper. That shapes both the pitch and your leverage.

Lee Enterprises runs dozens of local dailies concentrated in mid-size markets, sold market by market by local reps rather than through one national desk. The posture is quote-only: no central rate card, each market quoting directly, with print increasingly bundled with Amplified, Lee’s digital services arm.

The market-desk model, and how it buys

Unlike Gannett’s centralized LocaliQ funnel, a Lee buy usually starts with the local paper’s own ad desk, which retains real pricing authority. That is good news for a prepared buyer: the person quoting you can also discount you, the same day. The standard mechanics apply, request the card, get per-inch figures in writing, open the frequency conversation, and expect the Amplified attach: digital add-ons proposed alongside print. Judge each component on its own arithmetic, exactly as with any bundle.

Multi-market Lee buys (a brand spanning several Lee cities) can be assembled through the markets or coordinated centrally; make the reps compete on the assembled total, and compare the result against the other chain’s bundle at Gannett vs Lee.

Leverage

Negotiating where the paper is the only paper

In a one-paper market the desk knows you lack a print alternative, and you know the paper lacks an advertiser surplus: both facts are true, and the second one is truer every year (see the record). Your leverage is the channel alternative: local radio, direct mail, and Meta all sell your market too, and saying so, with numbers from the comparisons, is the polite pressure that moves a monopoly quote. Remnant flexibility (standby space) works especially well at papers this size.
