Sizes: the small print
Small newspaper ads: 2x2s, cards, and front-page real estate
The units under an eighth of a page, where steady presence is the strategy and position is the upsell.
The small display units are the 2x2 (2 columns by 2 inches, 4 column inches), the business-card unit (about 6 column inches), and the eighth page (15.75). On any per-inch card the math is trivial: a 2x2 at the one published national per-inch rate computes to $1,410.12. Front-page strips and sticky notes are premium positions, quote-only everywhere.
Source: WSJ 2026 General Advertising Rate Card, Issue #92, effective Jan 1 2026, retrieved Jul 31, 2026. Computed from the Western Edition color open rate; local per-inch rates run far below national ones, so the same unit is cheap ink locally.
| Unit | Dimensions | Col. inches | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x2 | 2 col x 2 in | 4 | ROP, desk places it |
| Business card | 2 col x 3 in | 6 | ROP or services directory |
| Eighth page | 3 col x 5.25 in | 15.75 | ROP |
| Front-page strip | 6 col x 1.5-2 in | 9-12 | Guaranteed: bottom of A1 |
| Sticky note | 3 x 3 in note over A1 | n/a | Guaranteed: on the front page itself |
Buying craft, not a published rate: dimensions are common US conventions; each paper’s spec sheet states its exact units, and front-page products are priced as premiums per paper.
Frequency vs one big ad
A 2x2 every week for a quarter costs about what one half page costs on a flat per-inch card (13 runs x 4 inches = 52 column inches, against 63 for the half page). The weekly card builds the thing a one-off cannot: recognition. Service businesses live on the moment a reader needs a plumber and remembers seeing yours every week; that memory is bought by repetition, not size. The one-off wins only when there is a date attached, a sale, an event, an opening.
What the desk says
What it means
“The front-page strip gets you the best position in the paper.”
True, and priced like it. Guaranteed A1 positions are the desk's highest-margin small product; make them quote the same weeks as ROP 2x2s so you can see the premium in dollars.
“The services directory is our small-business special.”
A directory page groups you with competitors, which suits emergency categories (locksmiths) and hurts consideration ones (remodelers). Know which you are.
