The record

Does newspaper advertising work?

A page that refuses to answer with somebody else's percentage. Here is the evidence, who paid for it, and the test that outranks it.

The effectiveness evidence splits by who funded it. Industry research (the News/Media Alliance publishes the main body) finds print ads earn high trust and attention; it is produced by the industry selling the ads. Independent audience data (Pew) confirms the readers are real but older and fewer each year. Both are true, neither is your answer: your category, offer, and market decide, and they can be tested for the cost of a few insertions.

The case for, stated fairly

Print’s mechanism is credibility and attention. A newspaper ad sits in a paid-for, finite, locally trusted document read on purpose; industry studies consistently report higher ad receptivity and trust for news-brand contexts than for social feeds. The audience skews older and higher-income (the readership page carries the sourced shape), which is precisely the customer for half of local commerce: medical, legal, financial, home improvement, funerals, real estate.

The case against, stated fairly

The audience shrinks every year (Pew’s trendline), frequency is expensive relative to digital repetition, measurement is coarser, and creative sits static in a medium whose best days of coupon culture are behind it. A business whose customers are under 40 will usually buy the same attention cheaper in other channels; the Meta comparison runs that argument honestly.

The referee

The $1,000-class test that settles it for your business

The protocol

Four weekly quarter-page runs in your best-fit local paper, one tracked offer, one tracked number or code, then four weeks dark. Repeat once. Two on-cycles of lifted calls equals evidence; two flat cycles equals your answer.

The arithmetic

Total spend divided by tracked responses, then through your close rate to cost per customer, compared against your other channels’ CAC. The full instrumentation is on the tracking page.

Buying craft, not a published rate: the test design is craft; its results, unlike everything above, will be evidence about your business specifically.
